BEAT THE PILE OR EAT IT

You know this game. You probably know it by a ruder name. Three cards face down that nobody looks at, three face up that everybody can see, and five in your hand. The last player still holding cards is the Karma.

( /01  What It Is )

A card game with nothing bolted on to it.

The rules page inside Karma
The rules, in one breath

Twos start again. Tens burn it all away. A five turns the whole table around.

Beat the pile or pick it up. Play your hand down to nothing, then the three face-up cards, then the three face-down ones you were never allowed to look at. Get rid of them all and you're out. The last player still holding cards is the Karma.

No adverts. No in-app purchases. Nothing to collect, nothing to unlock. It does not want your email address and there is no account to make.

Choosing opponents and difficulty in Karma

Take on the house

Offline

One to three bots. Easy plays badly on purpose. Hard simulates the hands it cannot see before it moves.

The privacy cover Karma shows between turns in pass and play

Pass and play

Offline

Everyone round one phone. The screen covers itself between turns, so nobody sees a hand that isn't theirs.

Starting a private table in Karma with a four-letter code

Play with friends

Online

Start a table, share a four-letter code, and play from anywhere. That's the whole setup.

Ranked play in Karma, matched against a stranger

Play the world

Online

Matched with a stranger. Ranked, thirty seconds a turn, and it counts towards the leaderboard.

Solo and pass-and-play need no connection at all — the whole game ships inside the app.

Stay close even when life pulls you apart.

Karma was made for two sisters who live a long way apart, so that a four-letter code and ten minutes could put them at the same table. That's the whole reason it exists.

Three down, three up, five in hand. Last one holding cards is the Karma.

One round takes about ten minutes. You'll lose the first one.
